Hi all,
i have shorted or even may be ran high voltage thru my usb ports and killed my motherboard. I had a mcu programmer connected when its wires ran across a board I was working on and my laptop died
I don't know what that wires touched but whatever it was that board i was working on has uninsulated power supply so even ground is bad(high power dc motor controller). And to make it worse for any reason HP had omitted all the protection elements on the usbs so they are directly connected to ICH
So that is how it died. I am afraid is totally dead but I am asking for second opinion because I am not specialized in computer hardware.
All the usb lines on the ICH were shorted to ground, 3.3VS5 and 1.0V_DEEP_SUS were shorted to ground and to each other, VCC_CORE to ground 2 ohms, VCCGT 4ohms, VGACORE ~10ohms to ground. All output inductors were desoldered but the shorts are after them. So after checking caps on 3.3v and 1.0v I decided that ICH was surely destroyed and after it was removed shorts on 3.3VS5 and 1.0V_DEEP_SUS were gone but ones on CPU and GPU are still there. Is there any way to check if CPU and GPU are shorted internally without desoldering them. Can i ran some amps trough these lines?
And generally if anyone have worked on motherboards destroyed by high voltage on USBs please advise should I push forward with repair or cut my losses and buy a new board.
Just to let you know my level, I am an EE but my field is repair and engeneering of beauty equipment, MCUs and analog electronics.
Best wishes!
